30 years SMI

The Swiss Market Index (SMI), Switzerland’s most important equity index, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. It was launched on 30 June 1988 and has represented the Swiss stock market ever since.

The SMI contains the 20 largest and most liquid companies listed on the Swiss stock exchange. Together they cover 80% of the total Swiss stock market. This means that the SMI also serves as an indicator of the overall Swiss stock market as well as the Swiss economy.

Customers from all around the world use the SMI as a baseline value for all current financial products such as ETFs, index funds, mandates, structured products and index derivatives. Successful Swiss companies today make the SMI one of the most well-known benchmarks around the world.
