Discontinuation of LSV+/BDD Direct Debit Procedures

Discontinuation of LSV+/BDD Direct Debit Procedures

Current LSV+/BDD Direct Debits Will Be Discontinued on 30 September 2028.

In consultation with the bodies of the Swiss financial center, SIX has decided to discontinue the existing LSV+/BDD direct debit procedures as of 30 September 2028. This decision affects all market participants participating in LSV+/BDD in Switzerland.

Reasons for Discontinuation

The LSV direct debit procedure was launched in 1977. The current LSV+/BDD direct debit procedures were introduced in 2005. In the meantime, the Swiss financial center has harmonized payment transactions and adapted them to the ISO 20022 payment standard. LSV+/BDD do not fully comply with this standard.

However, the harmonization of payment standards is the basis for efficient and competitive Swiss payments in the future. In the coming years, further investments in technology and formats would be required in order to meet today's requirements for a direct debit solution. These investments would affect invoice issuers, software partners, financial institutions and SIX as the operator of the direct debit infrastructure.

In addition, the physical signing of debit authorizations by means of forms is no longer in line with today's standards or with the digitization strategy for payment transactions. At the same time, the declining number of transactions shows that invoice issuers are increasingly turning to alternative payment methods.

Timing of Discontinuation

In concrete terms, the discontinuation means that LSV+/BDD collections will only be possible until 30 September 2028. This end date has been deliberately chosen to give financial institutions, invoice issuers and software partners sufficient time to switch to alternative solutions.

Alternative Payment Options

For the period following the discontinuation of LSV+/BDD, the established formats such as eBill, QR-bill, standing order or individual payment order are available.

Invoice Issuers Must Act

SIX recommends that invoice issuers decide in advance which format they want to use for future invoicing and coordinate this appropriately with their financial institution and software partner. This will ensure a smooth transition to alternative payment formats.
