In the 1st quarter 2022, trading turnover in ETFs on the Swiss Exchange reached CHF 34,992 million (20,691 million vs. Q4); sustainable ETFs are still on the rise. This is shown in the latest edition of the ETF Market Report.
The markets are characterized by strong uncertainties: the Russia-Ukraine conflict, rising inflation, and concerns about the planned interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve. It is not surprising that, in view of the aforementioned conflict, the energy sector in the USA remains the best performing sector with a gain of 39.03%, driven by concerns about oil supply. The Swiss stock market is also feeling the uncertainty: the performance achieved was in the broad midfield - the financial and healthcare sectors held up best.
However, the uncertainties had no impact on the ETF market, even the opposite: the number of trades at the end of Q1 was 5.00% higher than the high level of the same quarter last year. Moreover, the turnover of CHF 34.99 billion already represented a percentage of 43.98% of the full year 2021.
