SIX Payment Services was one of the first payment services providers in Europe to enter into a collaborative arrangement with the Chinese payment platform Alipay. With more than 520 million active users in China, Alipay is the world's largest platform for online and mobile payments and is operated by Ant Financial Services Group. Alipay has been incorporated into the acceptance portfolio of SIX alongside all the usual credit and debit cards, for use with the relevant solutions. This means that merchants working with SIX can now also accept mobile payments from Alipay users.

SIX offers its customers with busy points of sale a cash-register-integrated solution for Alipay acceptance which enables businesses to offer their customers their usual means of payment.

Peter Reinle, Director Marketing at TITLIS cableways: "We are delighted that we can now offer our Chinese customers Alipay. We at TITLIS cableways constantly endeavour to support our guests with new technology and to offer them the payment means they are used to."

Roger Niederer, Head Merchant Services at SIX Payment Services: "Of more than 520 million Alipay users in China, over 12 million travelled to Europe last year. We at SIX wish to provide our merchants with the simplest, quickest and most reliable payment process. For SIX it was therefore self-evident that we needed to include Alipay in our acceptance portfolio and provide Chinese tourists with the payment solution they prefer and trust – irrespective of where in the world they are and at what height above sea level."

Questions & answers

Mr Reinle, what are the particular needs of cableways when it comes to payments?
We have to deal with a very large number of transactions in a very short space of time. Smoothly functioning IT infrastructure is very important. We wish to offer our global customers the types of payment they are familiar with and to adapt constantly to changes in the market.

You started with Alipay last week, so is TITLIS well known among the Chinese?
More than 1 million people visit TITLIS every year, of whom over 100,000 come from China. What they particularly like is the short and uncomplicated journey, the only glacier developed for use in the Lucerne region, the outstanding cuisine on offer, including Chinese meals, and information in their own language. Active marketing in China is, of course, another prerequisite for success.
