About the SMIM & SMI Expanded
The SMIM and SMI Expanded extend the SMI family by including mid-cap stocks in the Swiss equity market.
The SMIM contains the 30 largest and most liquid mid-cap stocks that are not included in the blue-chip SMI.
The SMI Expanded contains all of the stocks in the SMI and the SMIM combined and hence the 50 largest and most liquid securities in the Swiss equity market.

The SMIM comprises the 30 largest mid-cap stocks in the Swiss equity market that are not included in the blue-chip SMI index. As in the case of the SMI, the components are selected according to their free-float-adjusted market capitalization and based on their turnover.
- The composition of the SMIM is reviewed once a year in September. Calculation takes place in real-time tick-by-tick, i.e. each new transaction involving a stock included in the SMIM causes the index to be recalculated.
- The SMIM was standardized at 1,000 points on December 31, 1999.
The SMI Expanded comprises the SMI and the SMIM and hence the 50 largest and most liquid securities in the Swiss equity market. It represents about 92% of the capitalization of the freely tradable shares of the Swiss equity market.
The index components are selected based on their free-float adjusted market capitalization and based on their turnover.
- The composition of the SMI Expanded is reviewed once a year in September. Its calculation takes place in real-time tick-by-tick, i.e. each new transaction involving a stock included in the SMI Expanded causes the index to be recalculated.
- The SMI Expanded was standardized at 1,000 points on December 31, 1999.
