Licensing

Any entity that wishes to access and use the SIX Indices on the buyside for portfolio management and trading activities, research and advisory purposes and on the sellside in connection with the creation, issuance, distribution, listing, management and maintenance of index-based products needs an index license.

SIX offers various index data packages covering different regions and asset classes. All SIX Indices are subject to a license. 

An index license is obtained by entering into a licensing agreement and an associated order form. There are various order forms to cover specific permitted purposes and use-cases.

If an entity that has no licensing agreement with SIX accesses and uses SIX Indices, SIX has the right to require the client to sign a licensing agreement to fully cover its past and current use of the SIX Indices.

Licensing allows the clients to legally use the SIX Indices for specific permitted purposes. It also provides them with access to index data related to the SIX Indices.

Existing custom indices are generally licensed directly with the owner of the index. SIX can customize indices based on client requirements. Please find out more on the customized index section of the website.

SIX distinguishes between restricted and unrestricted index data. Restricted index data is defined as index data that is not made freely accessible on the SIX website but is located within the password protected area of the website (SIX Index Data Center). Unrestricted index data refers to index data which is made freely accessible on the SIX website. Examples of restricted index data include component level data (e.g. weightings, prices, market capitalization and free floats of individual index constituents) and index divisors. They also include index adjustments relating to index components (e.g. corporate actions, selection lists, reviews and changes). Further, related data and information such as index updates, reports and historic data are also restricted. 

SIX index licensing agreements continue to be in place until a party terminates the licensing agreement. The terms of the licensing agreement do not need to be reviewed or renewed on a regular basis. 

Yes, clients are only permitted to use SIX Indices in connection with the permitted purpose as specified in the licensing agreement.
