Head Securities Services, SIX

He is Head Securities Services and Member of the Executive Board, SIX.

Javier Hernani took up his role of Head of the Securities Services business unit and he is member of the Executive Board of SIX Group, since January 2021, after the takeover of BME by SIX. He is also CEO of Bolsas y Mercados Españoles, Sociedad Holding de Mercados y Sistemas Financieros, SA, since April 2017.

He served as General Manager of BME from December 2012 to April 2017, with the specific role of coordinating the action of business units and corporate areas. Chairman of the Risk and Security Committees as well as Member of the board of several subsidiaries. Previously, he joined BME as Chief Financial Officer and member of the Executive Committee, assuming the role of conducting the integration process of the newly created group and leading the IPO process which took the company public as of 14th July 2006.

Prior to its incorporation to BME, Javier was Deputy General Manager of the Bilbao Stock Exchange (until 2003), CFO of Norbolsa, S.V.B. (until 1998) and Consultant in Coopers & Lybrand Brussels (until 1989).

Javier earned a Degree in Economics and Business by University of Deusto in 1986, a Master’s Degree in European Economic Studies, specialising in Economics, by The College of Europe in Brussels in 1988 and a Master’s Degree in Advanced Management by University of Deusto in 1997.

CEO, WFE

Nandini Sukumar is the Chief Executive Officer of the World Federation of Exchanges, the global association for exchanges and CCPs. Founded in 1961 and headquartered in London, the WFE represents more than 300 exchanges and clearing houses globally, educating stakeholders on the vital role played by market infrastructures in the real economy and as a standard setter, finding the consensus on issues among the global membership. WFE exchanges are home to 59,400 listed companies, and the market capitalization of these entities is over $122.94 trillion; around $162.04 trillion (EOB) in trading annually passes through WFE members (at end 2021.) WFE’s 57 member CCPs collectively ensure that risk takers post some $1 trillion (equivalent) of resources to back their positions, in the form of initial margin and default fund requirements.

Ms. Sukumar is the Vice Chair of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) Affiliate Members Consultative Committee (AMCC) and Chair of the AMCC’s Sustainability Taskforce.

Head Clearing Services, SIX

Laura Bayley is originally a lawyer and has extensive experience in regulatory topics and projects related to financial market infrastructures. She
has worked at SIX since 2016 and at SIX x-clear since 2020. As responsible for regulatory and strategic topics within SIX x-clear she has gained
insights into the functioning of the clearing market and has been heavily involved in various integration projects between SIX x-clear and BME Clearing.
On 01 May 2022, Laura took over the management of SIX x-clear at a legal entity level and continues to be responsible for regulatory and governance topics across BME and SIX on a functional level within the area of clearing. She is also a permanent guest on the Management Board of the Securities Services Business Unit.
Prior to working at SIX, Laura worked for a large Swiss law firm after finalising her double degrees in Law and Sinology from the Universities of
Zurich and Berne.

Managing Director, LMAX Digital at LMAX Group

Jenna Wright is the Managing Director of LMAX Digital, part of LMAX Group, and has recently been named as one of the top 25 Women Leaders in Financial Technology of Europe by The Financial Technology Report. Jenna has been instrumental in driving growth of LMAX Digital and building it into the leading institutional spot crypto currency exchange globally.  Jenna joined LMAX Group in January 2009 and has held multiple senior managerial roles at LMAX Group, including Head of Broker Operations and Head of Client Services. Prior to LMAX Group, Jenna worked at Cantor and UBS. Jenna holds BA in Economics & Politics from the University of Manchester.

European Head of Operations, Instinet

Tanith Johnson is European Head of Operations for Instinet. In this role, Mrs. Johnson has been instrumental in the seamless implementation, management and evolution of Operations at the firm, including the broad spectrum of complex MiFID requirements and Brexit. In addition, she has been a key architect in the delivery of new business solutions such as client clearing services.

Having joined Instinet in 2009, Mrs. Johnson became Head of European Operations in 2010, and was promoted to Managing Director in 2016. Her achievements have been recognized by European Women in Finance with the award for “Excellence in Operations.” Prior to Instinet, Mrs. Johnson held positions with Credit Suisse Securities and Morgan Stanley.

She is a graduate of Middlesex University with a focus in Business Studies.

Head of Markets, ARTEX MTF AG

Phil McNelly is Head of Markets of ARTEX MTF AG and a member of the Executive Committee. 

Phil has over 25 years’ experience in the Investment Banking sector with a strong focus on post trade market infrastructure. Phil spent 11 years at Deutsche Bank where he held several roles within the Global Technology & Operations Division and represented Deutsche Bank on a number of key industry associations & working groups.

Phil joined SIX Securities Services in 2008 to develop and manage SIX x-clears Exchange & MTF relationships, he has been responsible for managing the Sales & Relationship Management function for SIX Securities Services Clearing business and more recently was responsible for Markets & Product Innovation for SIX Clearing and a member of SIX x-clears Management Committee.

Global Head of Depositary & Network Management, MUFG

Mr. Brendan Toolan is General Manager at Mitsubishi UFJ Investor Services and Banking (Luxembourg) S.A. - Dublin Branch. In addition to this local leadership role in Ireland, Mr. Toolan is a member of the Executive Committee of the Bank in Europe, with responsibility for the Depositary & Network Management function in a global role. Mr. Toolan is also a member of the Euroclear SA/NV Client Advisory Board for Global Custodians. 
 
Mr. Toolan is approved as a PCF by the Central Bank of Ireland has been with MIBL Dublin Branch since November 2017, having over thirty years of industry experience in banking operations and client management in London, Dublin and the Isle of Man. Prior to MIBL, Mr. Toolan has worked for Fidelity Investments, Brown Brothers Harriman, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and JPMorgan Investor Services over the course of a +20 year period. 
 
Mr. Toolan holds a University Diploma in Financial Services awarded by University College Dublin and is a member of both the Institute of Bankers (Ireland) and the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (UK).

Head Commercials, SIX

Marcus Harréus leads the Commercials organisation within Securities Services.

In this capacity, he leads all of the relationship management, product management and sales activities for the post-trade area.

Marcus Harréus also heads the legal entity SIX SIS AG which provides settlement and custody activities by being Switzerland’s regulated national Central Securities Depository (CSD) and by serving its regulated clients worldwide as a Global Custodian.

He joined SIX as Head Strategy of Securities Services in 2013, a position he held for four years. Prior to SIX, Marcus enjoyed a long and varied career in the financial sector. He spent twelve years in a range of key positions at Deutsche Börse AG, where he acquired ample management experience and an in-depth understanding of global markets. He has also spent extended periods of time working in Australia and London.

Marcus’ practical expertise is augmented by an MBA, which he earned from the Goethe University Frankfurt. Marcus is also a member of the board of directors of Regis-TR SA.

Business Head Digital Securities SDX, SIX

Alexandre Kech is Business Head Digital Securities at the SIX Digital Exchange. Mr. Kech has full executive responsibility for the Digital Securities business vertical including: sales and relationship management, product development, business design and ecosystem expansion.

Over the past 25 years, Mr. Kech has constructed a unique career combining finance at BNY Mellon, payments/securities infrastructure and standards at SWIFT, and blockchain and digital assets at Onchain Custodian (ONC) and most recently Citi Ventures. As co-founder and CEO of ONC, Mr. Kech led the Singapore and Shanghai-based team that built from scratch a custody and prime brokerage service for crypto and other digital assets. As Blockchain & Digital Asset director at Citi Ventures, he built a team to engage across the European ecosystem on emerging use cases for blockchain technologies and digital assets.

Manager of Business Solutions, Caceis

Head of Global Securities Services, BBVA

Alexis Thompson is Head of Global Securities Services for BBVA. He is also responsible for Strategy & Business Development for Global Transaction Banking within Corporate & Investment Banking.

He joined BBVA in 2012 as Head of Product in Global Operations where he was charged with aligning operational capabilities with the needs of the different business lines.Prior to that, Mr. Thompson worked at Altura Markets for 12 years as Chief Operating Officer, where he was responsible for Client Services, Operations and IT.

Mr. Thompson holds a BA (Hons) degree in Hispanic & Latin American Studies from King's College London.

Secretary General ECSDA

Anna is Secretary General of the European Central Securities Depositories Association (ECSDA). 

She is a lawyer by background and holds a Master in European law and a multidisciplinary Master in Law and Economics and is also trained in managing strategic projects by the University of Oxford Saïd Business School. 

Anna combines an extensive post-trade knowledge with the policy-making experience. She started her career at the general secretariat of one of the political parties at the European Parliament. Then having worked in the Business Transformation and Service Excellence department of an ICSD as well as for their group in Strategy and Government Relations. She is leading the European CSD industry association since 2017. 

Head Regis-TR, SIX

Thomas Steimann joined REGIS-TR S.A. in 2019 from the Spanish Central Securities Depository Iberclear, where he was external advisor for strategic projects in the area of domestic and cross-border post-trade securities services. He serves as CEO and Member of the Executive Board of Directors of REGIS-TR S.A. since June 2019. 

Between 1998 and 2017, Thomas was at Deutsche Bank SAE in Madrid, initially with responsibility for non-resident institutional clients’ securities clearing & custody activity in the Spanish market, and from 2006 to 2017 as head of securities clearing & custody and depository bank services for all institutional clients. His responsibilities in this role included P&L for the business unit, control and supervision of operational service delivery and representation of the business to market participants, supervisory authorities and industry groups. 

Thomas began his professional career at Westdeutsche Landsbank’s Düsseldorf headquarters, later taking responsibility for the Controlling department for Treasury and Foreign Exchange at West LB (Europa) AG in Madrid. 

He has a degree in Business Administration from the University of Cologne and he is a native German speaker and fluent in Spanish and English. 

Head International Custody Operations, SIX

Stephan Hänseler heads the international Custody business of SIX, providing settlement and custody activities by serving its regulated clients worldwide as a Global Custodian. In this capacity, Stephan is responsible for the management and further development of the international Custody business and acts as a catalyst and driver of the Swiss Financial Center’s competitiveness. Stephan joined SIX in 2019, after having worked for over two decades in different roles within Credit Suisse and UBS in Zurich and Singapore. Aside from managing global, complex projects, he has a proven track record in the securities industry. He is experienced in managing global teams, with a special focus on acquisition, relationship management, product development and operations.

Executive Director, Securities Services Global Custody Industry Development, JP Morgan

Emma Johnson is an Executive Director and custody product manager within J.P. Morgan’s Corporate and Investment Bank in London. Sitting in the Securities Services division her core remit is European post trade securities market and regulatory advocacy, market infrastructure and industry developments. Emma is also the CSDR file lead for the CIB. 

Emma joined J.P. Morgan in January 2022 from Deutsche Bank, where she was the EMEA Head of Securities Services Market Advocacy. She previously held various positions within product and operational teams over her 20 year career in securities post-trade.

Active in the securities post trade industry, Emma represents the firm through multiple industry committees such as AFME’s Post Trade Executive Committee, the AGC European Focus Committee and the EBF Post Trade Expert Group.
